The Equality Garden Club's mission is to provide education, resources and networking opportunities for its members and to promote the love of plant-related sciences and activities, general gardening, civic and environmental responsibility.
The Equality Garden Club was founded in 2010 as a way to support a proposed public garden that we hoped would be created in Wilton Manors. At the first meeting, many people arrived ready to work. Tours of the grounds and a slide-show presentation were given to the attendees. About 25 people came. Chuck Nicholls and Chip Jones conceived the ideas for the garden club and designed the plans for the public garden. Maeva Malloy was instrumental in the beginning bringing her experiences with a defunct garden club from Wilton Manors. Jesse Durko, a local nurseryman and plant expert was the first guest speaker in April 2010. The first year our speakers were paid little to nothing and the group operated exclusively by the support of the members and the generosity of the speakers. In addition to guest speakers on plant-related topics, the meetings have consisted of a plant raffle table in addition to the "Bring a plant-take a plant" table. The group is fond of hosting trips or "rambles" taking members (and guests) plant shopping. We have also visited local private and public gardens as well as botanical gardens. The Equality Park Garden Club has also produced a Tropical Plant Fair for the last three years.
